Types of Wine by Style & Taste

Ever find yourself a bit overwhelmed when wandering the aisles of your local wine store? I know I do! I love trying new wine, but with 200+ different styles out there, I find myself relying on the sales associates suggestions far too often. So, earlier this afternoon, I was browsing through Pinterest (per usual) when I came across this awesome chart from Wine Folly, which organizes wine by taste and style! Using this chart I was able to easily identify new styles I would like to try based off current styles I already enjoy.

Definitely looking forward to my next trip to Astor Wine & Spirits, and the only question I will have for the sales associate this time will be, "which way to the beaujolais?" ;)

Cheers, A.

It's in the bag: My Summer Beauty Steals!

When it comes to trying new beauty products, let's just say the drug store is not my go to. However, a few weeks ago I was in the city reuniting with my long lost Pi Phi loves, when my girl friend Sara pulled out a vibrant cherry colored lip stick. I watched as she applied it; it went on rather softer than expected- but pretty none the less! When she said it was Maybelline Baby Lips from the drugstore, I had to try it! It went on so smooth like a chapstick, but gave nice color- I was impressed! ... bye-bye Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. A few days later I ventured into CVS in search of it, when I noticed they were having a special on Maybelline products. Obviously, I couldn't leave with just one, so I picked up the "cherry me " and "pink punch" being a couple dollars shy of earning the "extra bucks" I reached for the Volum' Express Mega Plush Mascara in Brownish Black. Who knew that this would soon replace my beloved Hyperlash Mascara from Smashbox. The Maybelline Mega Plush Mascara is a gel-mousse mascara which contains 40% less hard waxes which definitely gave me "massive, yet supple lashes." The brownish black color is a great softer option for summer time!

My third summer beauty steal I have give my mom credit for finding! She has been pushing this product on me for over a year, and I finally get why! I have been using a tinted moisturizer since high school, Nars 'Pure Radiant' Tinted Moisturizer to be exact, but woah! I am convinced that Garnier BB Cream Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector is truly just that, a miracle! I have sampled a few department store brands since, but honestly nothing compares to this $13 find! Not to mention the tube is huge and will last the entire summer! The coverage rivals a foundation, it moisturizes but isn't oily, and is packed with Vitamin C and other skincare properties.

If you are looking for a quick and easy make-up routine for the summer, pick up these three beauty steals, add a little shimmer with a bronzer on your cheek bones and you are good to go! Not to mention, have a few extra dollars in your pocket for a  glass  bottle of bubbly!

Good Eats: Fruit Inspired Salads

Other than the sun-kissed skin, easy-breezy sun dresses and beach-wavied hair, something I look forward to in the summer time are the green markets and cooking with fresh, flavorful ingredients... such as fresh fruit!

Lettuce be honest here. ;) I enjoy a yummy salad, but when it comes to preparing them at home, it just never seems to taste as good as when I order one out. Maybe it's my typical boring choice of toppings; shredded carrots, tomato, onion, etc. that just isn't doing it for me.

However, I am determined to break out of the boring salad rut I have been stuck in, and liven it up a bit by incorporating the fresh fruit I picked up at the local green market!

So, with the mission in mind, I took to the world wide web for some inspiration! After scouring pinterest, food gawker and some of my favorite foodie blogs, I found a few "fruit salads" I am excited to try! Who want to reserve a seat in this test kitchen? ... Champagne included of course! ;)

The Hangover: What Works & What Does Not.

With a long weekend ahead of us, booze-fueled debauchery is sure to ensue! Whether it be barbecues and brew or boats and booze... one thing is certain, that awful morning after stumble and rumble is bound to happen! When shopping for chips and dips, mixers and meats, don't forget to stock up on a few of these items to get you through that horrid hangover and back out there for round two...or three... or four in no time!

What Works & What Does Not
 (creative title, huh?)

  • Hang Over Pills: LOL... if these actually worked wouldn't we all have a cabinet full of them?!
  • Coffee: On the contrary, caffeine will only dehydrate you more. A weak cup may be ok to wake you up, but your standard double-shot is not going to work to your favor in the long run. But trust me, alcohol withdrawal paired with caffeine withdrawal from not having your daily dose is for sure not going to make you feel better either...
  • Sports Drinks: Before you go fueling up on electrolytes, you may want to opt for another glass of water instead. Although you do lose a few, you don't loose enough to necessarily go "replacing" them just yet. Save yourself the $3.
  • The "Hair of the Dog" Method: This may get you from your Saturday night rager trough your Sunday champagne brunch, but at the end of the day, the added alcohol only creates a numbing effect and prolongs the inevitable.
  • Greasy Food: Although research doesn't support this theory, I sure do! I'll have a bacon, egg and cheese, please!
  • Water: Your best friend, good 'ole H2O! Ever hear the term "breaking the seal"? ... of course you have... anyways, alcohol is a natural diuretic (a substance that makes you have to pee...in lamest terms) and can cause dehydration (the excessive loss of body water which can disrupt the metabolic processes). Before sinking into slumber, drinking a few glasses can help ease the pain the next morning. I know I usually have to sleep with two (sometimes three), bottles of water next to my bed... usually which end up empty on the floor by the time I wake up the next morning. Lots of doctors recommend drinking a glass of water in between cocktails to rehydrate as you go... and NO mixing your vodka WITH water does NOT count ;)
  • Pain Relievers: A necessity to ease a pounding headache! But it is recommended to opt for a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Advil or Aleve; opposed to a acetaminophen (aka- Tylenol) as it may be fine for your headache symptoms, but when your liver is already overcompensating to metabolize the alcohol, it can cause liver damage or even worse.... be deadly.... muuuhaha. Alka-Seltzer Morning Relief is also said to do the trick. It packs a maximum strength pain reliever and caffeine into a "effervescent product" that is easy on your tummy, helps you re-gain your energy as well as relieve minor aches/pains/fatigue/drowsiness associated with a hangover. PMS (Yes, pre-menstrual cycle) remedies such as Midol and Pamprin pair a pain reliever with caffeine and are said to do the trick as well! Who would have thought?
  • The "Sweat it Out" Method: Whether it be exercising or the sauna, doctors say that excessive sweating when you are already dehydrated can cause a disruption to the normal blood flow pattern including dangerous drops in blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms. And you thought I was just being lazy when I said I didn't want to go to Bikram with you... Although a gentle work out could help you feel better, or at least not as guilty about all those calories you consumed last night... or this morning.
  • Sleep: Paired with water you have a winning combination! Alcohol is quick to put you to sleep, but when it starts to wear off hours later, it can send your body in a tail-spin... or at least feel like your spinning... Once the intoxication state starts to wear off your body can start experiencing a sense of withdrawal causing you to feel anxious and awake. If you are able to sleep it off, lucky you! If you are the unlucky soul who has to function at work the next day after a night of partying and 3 hours of shut-eye, sleep deprivation will only intensify the symptoms of your hangover. Poor you.
  • Vitamins: Instead of popping a "hang over helper" try taking a multivitamin instead. You do not lose that many nutrients after a night of boozing, but it may help you feel better after last nights binge. Protein or mineral rich foods or juices can help. I hear they drink pickle juice in Poland...
  • Sex: Although there is no supporting evidence that sex will make a hangover go away, I quote "but maybe it will make the time go faster... If it make you happy, go for it." ... haha, only in Men's Health!
Now I am no doctor, and this certainly is not sound medical advice, but my recommendation is:
  • Eat a solid meal before you start drinking.
  • Drink responsibly. Beer bongs and chugging are so 5 years ago...
  • Take a couple pain relievers before bed and drink a couple glasses of water.
  • Hydrate through the night and next day.
  • Sleep in.
  • Eat a bacon, egg and cheese... or two!
  • Maybe throw in a Mimosa... or two! ;)
  • Let time work its magic!

In Ireland it was said that the cure for a hangover is to bury the ailing person up to the neck in moist river sand... you could try that too! ;)
 Cheers, A.

Current Obsession: Charlotte Olympia's Cosmic Collection

So, recently I've developed a major design crush on Charlotte Olympia! I mean, borderline obsession... but not in a creepy way... at least I think not? From her sky-high platforms to her whimsical flats, her designs never fail to catch my attention! Currently, I am dying to slip my feet into a pair from the Half-Brazilian / Half-English designer's Cosmic Collection!

The capsule collection of Birthday Shoes and Zodiac Pandora Clutch Boxes were exclusively designed to celebrate the twelve star signs. The slipper-inspired suede shoes feature a gold hand-painted enamel Zodiac symbol, embellished with Swarovski crystals. An eye-catching horoscope embroidery also appears on the side of each pair, making them all the more unique! Each pair of Birthday Shoes comes with a Charlotte Olympia horoscope book and an adhesive Polaroid picture which can be placed on the outside of your shoe box to archive your Charlotte Olympia collection... bonus!  ;)

Just in case anyone was curious, I wear a size 39 ;)
Recently, I read an interview Charlotte did with Sandra from the blog, Sandra's Closet:
and was I became entranced by her old hollywood glamour appeal. If you know me, you'd know that I truly believe I was born in the wrong era. I was definitely meant to be a woman of the 40's, a decade in which Charlotte draws much of her inspiration. I feel like we would make great friends. Charlotte, call me!

One fun fact I learned from reading the interview was that her signature trademark, the spider web (found on all of her shoes) was actually inspired by my favorite children's book, Charlotte's Web! ... That's it, soul-sisters!

Anyways, her Zodiac Flats retail at $695 and can be found at luxury retailers from Net-A-Porter to Bergdorf.

                                                            Cheers, A.

Champagne 101

Ahhh, so here it is. My first blog post. :)
And what better to make my first post about than Champagne?
My beloved bubbly!
Guess it's time to pop a bottle...

Enjoying some champs with Marcy at Galley Beach on Nantucket. Picture perfect day!

I was once asked the silly question of "If you were to be stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one thing with you, what would you bring?" Well, first off, let me start by saying that if I was ever in a situation that would leave me stranded somewhere, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have time to go searching for that one particular item. But, hypothetically speaking, it would definitely be champagne. A very BIG bottle of champagne! Winston Churchill once said [when speaking of the bubble beverage] "In Success you deserve it and in defeat, you need it". If I were stranded on a deserted island, I would need it.

The Champagne we know and love comes exclusively from the Champagne region of France, and claims the honor of being the most famous of the sparkling wines. Technically, it is the only sparkling wine that may be referred to as "Champagne." Bubbly from all other regions in the world are simply referred to as "sparkling wine," though regional specialties abound. It is a variety of sparkling (or carbonated) wine, typically produced from a few specific varieties of grapes, including Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Although these grapes are not all white, champagne is typically a white wine due to extraction methods that minimize contact between the juice and skin. Pink champagnes derive their color from either longer contact between skin and juice or the addition of a small amount of red wine back into the champagne. Blanc de Blancs  is a sparkler made exclusively from white grapes, usually chardonnay, and usually lighter in body. Blanc de Noirs is made from red-wine grapes such as pinot noir and pinot meunier, though the skins are removed quickly so the wine remains white. They tend to be richer and more full-bodied.

Although I love a glass of Champagne; Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. give France a run for the money by producing some fantastic sparkling wines at exceptionally competitive price points.

What's in a name?

Nowadays the term is used so loosely, that many people make reference to drinking champagne, although there are so many different region specific varieties. In Europe, this is enforced by the European Union under the Protected Designation of Origin status. Because of this, sparkling wines from other European countries are sold under other names such as Prosecco (Italy), Cava (Spain), Sekt (Germany and Austria), and Spumante or Asti Spumante (Italy).

The United States does not fully restrict the use of the word Champagne, and allows some domestic producers to use the title on their label. Only those domestic producers who used the title “Champagne” prior to 2006 are allowed to continue its use, provided it is accompanied by the listing of the wine’s actual origin. Most other domestic sparkling wines will be simply labeled as “sparkling wine.” Although U.S. "champagne" definitely does not compare to those fine French grapes... atleast in my opinion. :)

How many bubbles are in a bottle of champagne?

... A lot. ;)

The bubbles of sparkling wines are formed during a second fermentation process. For the second fermentation the winemaker takes still wine and adds a few grams of sugar and a few grams of yeast. This yeast and sugar convert to carbon dioxide (bubbles) and, of course alcohol. This conversion makes for millions of bubbles trapped in a very small space, sending the pressure soaring to about 80 psi in the typical bottle of sparkling wine.   POP!   This second fermentation typically occurs in the actual bottle (referred to as the traditional Méthode Champenoise... AKA Champagne Method), but can also take place in a fermentation tank (called the Charmat Method), it's up to the winemaker.

To produce a constant flow of bubbles in poured Champagne, most Champagne flutes are etched to produce a source of “nucleation” where bubbles can form.

*To prevent excessive loss of carbonation before drinking, Champagne should be carefully poured down the side of the flute, rather than straight into the glass.*

Level of Sweetness

Depending on how much sugar is added for the secondary fermentation, Champagne will have varying levels of sweetness. The sugar and sweetness level is indicated by the terminology used on the label:

Brut Nature - Little or no sugar is added during the second fermentation. Wines with this label may have up to three grams of sugar added per liter.

Extra Brut – Slightly sweeter than Brut Nature, this wine may have up to six grams of sugar added per liter.

Brut (pronounced "broot") – The most common style of Champagne and sparkling wines. Typically still considered a fairly dry Champagne. Very food-friendly! Brut may contain up to 12 grams of sugar per liter. My go to :)

Extra Dry, Extra Sec, Extra Seco – In the twisted lexicon of wine terms, these words, on a Champagne label, actually mean the wine is slightly sweeter than Brut. Go figure. Great as an aperitif (an alcoholic beverage served before a meal) ;) Wines that bear this label contain between 12 and 17 grams of sugar per liter.

Dry, Sec, Seco – Although it is labeled as “dry,” Seco is considerably sweeter than Brut and may contain between 17 and 32 grams of sugar per liter.

Demi-Sec, Demi-Seco – Reaching into the sweeter end of the Champagne spectrum, Demi-Sec contains between 32 to 50 grams of sugar per liter. Pairs well with fruit and dessert.

Doux, Sweet, Dulce – The sweetest of Champagnes, bottles labeled with any of these three names contain 50 or more grams of sugar per liter.

Prosecco, Spumante, Asti Spumante: Italian sparklers; the spumantes are usually sweeter in style. Love me some Italian grapes anyday! A delicious prosecco and cheese or a Spumante with dessert :)

What are typical Aromas and Flavors found in Sparkling Wine and Champagne?

Aroma – can be reminiscent of fresh applesauce, spiced apple, ripe pear and “fresh baked bread” smells, compliments of the yeast that's added during the second fermentation.

Flavor – apple, pear, citrus, strawberry, cream and vanilla (typically on the finish), yeast and nutty flavors are all common denominators in Sparkling wines and Champagnes. However, if there is more ripe tree fruit on the palate, then it is likely one of the New World sparkling wines, the more subtle creamy, yeast and nut-like flavors are more common in Old World Champagne.

"Vintage" vs. "Non-Vintage"

Lastly, champagne and sparkling wines are also categorized as "vintage" or "non-vintage" (NV on the label) meaning they either come from a single year or are a blend of several different years. The "vintage" Champagnes are typically pricier, as the non-vintage Champagne and sparkling wines make up the majority of the market.

Well, let's just hope I never get stranded on a deserted island... once the champagne runs out, lord knows my survival skills are not the greatest ;)

cheers, A.
